- Description: How to check the Pinealon (EDR) and Epithalon (AEDG) peptides against their PubChem records and study methods before comparing them.

Pinealon and Epithalon are two short research peptides with different sequences. Pinealon is EDR: glutamic acid, aspartic acid and arginine, in that order. Epithalon, also spelled Epitalon, is AEDG: it begins with alanine and ends with glycine. A peptide name is easier to check when it comes with a sequence, because the different letters identify different compounds.

## Start with the peptide sequence and PubChem record

The [2011 Pinealon paper](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21978084/?ref=curo.ghost.io) describes synthetic Glu-Asp-Arg. PubChem's Pinealon record is CID 10273502\. The Epitalon record, CID 219042, describes Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly and lists Epithalon and Epithalone among its synonyms.

| Compound | Sequence | Formula | Mol. weight | PubChem record |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------- | ---------- | ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Pinealon (EDR) | Glu-Asp-Arg (3 residues) | C15H26N6O8 | 418.40 g/mol | [CID 10273502](https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/10273502?ref=curo.ghost.io) ([properties](https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/rest/pug/compound/cid/10273502/property/MolecularFormula,MolecularWeight/JSON?ref=curo.ghost.io)) |
| Epithalon (AEDG) | Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (4 residues) | C14H22N4O9 | 390.35 g/mol | [CID 219042](https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Epitalon?ref=curo.ghost.io) |

Two spellings can lead to one record, as Epitalon and Epithalon do. Pinealon leads to a separate record with a different sequence. Checking the identifier keeps a spelling question from becoming a compound mix-up.

## Check what the experiment studied

A matching name and sequence tell you which compound a paper discusses. The methods tell you where the measurements came from. The [2003 Epithalon paper](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12937682/?ref=curo.ghost.io) used human fetal fibroblasts in culture. Its telomerase-related measurements came from cultured cells; the paper was not a clinical trial in people.

The [2011 Pinealon cell study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21978084/?ref=curo.ghost.io) and the [2012 rat prenatal-hyperhomocysteinemia study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22567179/?ref=curo.ghost.io) used other experimental settings. Putting these references together does not produce a clinical comparison of the two peptides.

## Keep compound records and lot records separate

A PubChem identifier gives a researcher a reference for the compound's name and properties. It does not certify the contents of a particular container. A lot-specific report needs to identify the material and lot it describes; the reference formula alone cannot establish that lot's identity, purity or fill.

The [Pinealon EDR reference](https://sites.google.com/view/pinealon?ref=curo.ghost.io) collects the cited experimental settings. The [EDR and AEDG comparison](https://sites.google.com/view/pinealon/pinealon-vs-epithalon?ref=curo.ghost.io) keeps the two compounds' identifiers and research settings side by side.
